Investigation into polycystic ovary syndrome

13 Apr 2011

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting females. It is often associated with diabetes and obesity, yet its causes remain unknown. This thorough summary of research into PCOS by Pasquali and members of the PCOS Forum highlights a number of promising areas for future investigation into PCOS. Issues include the analysis of predisposing conditions that increase the risk of PCOS, investigation into the role of androgen excess in insulin resistance and the need to clearly define blood reference levels by a universal standard, amongst other important areas. This summary will help direct future research and allow for improved individualized therapeutic strategies for women with PCOS. Pasquali et al. (2011) Clinical Endocrinology 74 424–443.
