University lab technicians information request

09 Jun 2010

The Society of Biology has asked for help in relation to a research project that aims to explore the following issues: Demand for laboratory technician skills in UK universities; How university science and engineering departments go about satisfying that need (e.g. recruit people who already have the relevant skills, or need to train lab technicians specifically); Problems faced in recruiting and/or training.

This is an issue of importance in biology, both in education and research, and they would be grateful for your opinions and experiences to help with the stakeholder view phase of this investigation. There are reports of a perceived increasing mean age of lab technicians, and declining number of posts. If you have any evidence on these or other relevant areas, or have competing opinions or news to relate, please email them to public@endocrinology.org by 14 June 2010.
